Based on current ICBF calving figures it is estimated that our average cow is producing c.2.5-3 ltrs more than this time last year with 2021the only year in the
last 5 with better individual cow yield in early April.
Grass growth was strong last week, with the growth being ahead of the 5 year average, but we still have 10% of our farms with a lower than target average
farm cover and lower growth rates ion the back of that.
Next week is forecast to be wetter and colder
Growth is predicted to be similar to this week, while everything is going well we need to be cautious with our grass and feed our concentrates in balance with it.
We need milk and milk protein coming from grass from here to year end, not just now.
We need to maintain grazing pressure to ensure graze out, while keeping enough concentrates in to maintain production and overall AFC.
If grass levels drop too low on your farm it will be slower to grow grass
Make concentrate feeding decisions with one eye on production (yield and protein %) and one eye graze outs or overall AFC.
