To grow grass across the summer we need to spread 1 unit of nitrogen a day or 30 units a month. At farm level it is not uncommon to use a bag of CAN after each round of grazing. With a rotation length of 20 days this is spreading 27 units in 20 days or c.40 units per month.
We also need to look after the P, K and S requirements of our grazing ground.
If you have spread P and K across the spring to meet your ground requirements you can use straight N across the summer. However, if you have not spread P and K in the spring you will need to spread sweet 18s across the main grazing season
– For index 2 P and K ground: use 1.5 bags of sweet 18s across the summer
– For index 1 P and K ground: use 3 bags of sweet 18s across the summer + 0.5 bags of muriate of potash in September/October
All ground should get 16-20 units of Sulphur across the year. How much have you spread year to date? Do you need to include S in your summer fertiliser plan?
