Sustainable Tillage in a New Decade – Tillage Conference 2020

Dairygold will be hosting their annual tillage event on Friday 24th January in Fermoy, Co Cork. The conference themed ‘Sustainable Farming in a New Decade’ will showcase some of Ireland’s leading advisors in the tillage industry at the Corrin Event Centre.

“Speakers on the day will be taking a broader view of ‘sustainable farming’ for the benefit of the meeting and will be developing a picture that will help all to understand the challenges that tillage farmers face in the future and the practices that they can deploy to help combat a depleting environment,” explains Dairygold Tillage Technical Manager, Liam Leahy.

Irish Farmers Journal Tillage Journalist, Mathew Dempsey will be chairing the meeting on the day. The panel will include Dr David Wall, Teagasc Research Officer, will be briefing the crowd on Sustainable Tillage. East Cork Tillage Farmer Darren Allen will be talking about his experience with sustainable farming on his commercial farm.

Teagasc Crops Specialist, Ciaran Collins will be highlighting the most pressing issues surrounding Winter and Spring Crops. Dairygold’s own Nutritionist Colman Purcell will be explaining how the company uses over 110,000tn of native grain in their locally produced rations.

On the day, over 20 trade stands will be on show from 1.30pm. for visitors to engage in and also take advantage of our free water testing for pH on the day.

Dairygold’s Malting Barley winner will also be announced on the day. The winner is among eight finalists who have all been recognised for producing outstanding quality grain this year. The eight finalists are;

  • Michael Walsh, Cahir, Co Tipperary
  • John Hurley, Kildorerry, Co Cork
  • Jermiah Dineen, Ovens, Co Cork
  • Nigel O’Keeffe, Glanworth, Co Cork
  • James Pope, Ladysbridge, Co Cork
  • Michael Archdeacon, Banteer, Co Cork
  • Richard Lucey, Ballyclough, Co Cork

The winner will be picked from Dairygold’s 350 malting barley growers based on several criteria, including yield, quality and use of sustainable farming practices.

“Not alone were they picked for their excellence of producing top quality malting barley they also demonstrated an in depth understanding of our fragile environment and what they do to enhance it,” explains Liam Leahy about the winners.
